About Doctor Emily Larmore Cooper

Dr. Emily Larmore Cooper

Dr. Cooper is a board certified internal medicine physician who has practiced in Seattle since 2004. She has a long-standing reputation in Seattle as a very knowledgeable, personable, and compassionate physician.

Dr. Cooper feels passionate about developing lifelong relationships with her patients. After working for large medical organizations for 14 years, she found that she had to see more and more patients each day at the expense of not having enough time with her patients to foster these relationships. Therefore, she decided she had no choice but to open her own medical practice in order to give patients the care they deserved in a calm, unhurried environment.

Dr. Emily Cooper grew up just outside of Omaha, Nebraska. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL earning her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She attended the University of Nebraska College of Medicine earning her Medical Degree. She and her husband, Dr. Joshua Cooper, then made the move to Seattle to complete their residency training at Virginia Mason Medical Center. She has been practicing outpatient internal medicine since completing her residency in 2004.

She and Josh loved Seattle so much, they decided to make this their home. They live in Northeast Seattle with their two boys and energetic dog, Scout.

When she is away from the clinic, Dr. Cooper is passionate about fitness, hiking, downhill skiing, sailing, reading, and baking.

The Practice

At Sound Medicine & Wellness, we practice traditional primary care delivered in a novel way: around your schedule. Your life is busy, and we understand that. Being just a phone call away from your physician has its advantages! At Sound Medicine & Wellness your health care needs will be addressed when you desire.

This type of care is important to members who may:

  • Travel Frequently: For Dr. Cooper's patients who travel often for business or pleasure, they have peace of mind knowing Dr. Cooper is just a phone call or electronic message away to guide their care even when away from home. For frequent travelers who may only be in town for short periods of time, they don't have to worry about Dr. Cooper's clinic schedule being booked out for weeks.
  • Desire Access and Avoid Long Waits: Because Dr. Cooper's practice is limited to a few hundred (rather than over a thousand) patients, her busy patients avoid long waits in her reception area. Additionally, her patients don't have to wait for a week or two before they can be seen.
  • Have complex medical conditions: For Dr. Cooper's patients who have multiple health issues, it is advantageous to have a physician who knows them well and can help coordinate care with specialists.

What is Sound Medicine & Wellness?

  • Sound Medicine & Wellness is a direct pay internal medicine clinic offering exceptional personal care and accessibility in Northeast Seattle.
  • The clinic provides primary care services including office visits and a wellness program to help patients achieve whole body health.
  • Dr. Cooper's practice size will be limited to a manageable size which allows her to provide this unparalleled level of care. Patients have easy access to Dr. Cooper through phone, texting and virtual visits without going through multiple layers to reach them. We use a secure platform for phone/text messaging and virtual visits.
  • Patients are not rushed during their clinic visits and have enough time with Dr. Cooper to address all of their health concerns.

What exactly is Direct Primary Care?

  • The direct primary care (DPC) model, also known as concierge medicine, gives physicians a meaningful alternative to fee-for-service insurance billing, typically by charging patients a monthly or annual fee (i.e., a retainer) that covers all or most primary care services including routine and acute visits, care coordination and comprehensive care management.
  • NO INSURANCE is accepted from patients, and insurance is not billed by Dr. Cooper. The fee that patients pay Sound Medicine and Wellness covers unlimited visits with Dr. Cooper. This means patients won't have to worry about copays or issues with their insurance deductibles.
  • Dr. Cooper's patients will still want to use their health insurance policy to cover other health services such as: X-rays, labs, surgery, and visits to other medical specialists.
  • Direct primary care benefits patients by providing a greater degree of access to and time with Dr. Cooper.

Specialty Care

However, if she feels that specialty level care is needed, she will coordinate with specialists to provide your care. As an independent clinician, Dr. Cooper can match you with the best specialist for you and not be restricted to referring you within a specific organization.

Inpatient (hospital care)

Dr. Cooper will work closely with the hospitalists managing any inpatient stays you may have and smoothly transition your care when you are discharged back home or to a skilled nursing facility. She will continue to have privileges at both Swedish and Northwest Hospitals. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)/concierge medicine?

Under the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model, the patient (you) receives comprehensive primary health care directly from their DPC physician (Dr. Cooper). The patient pays for this care through a monthly fee, paid directly to Sound Medicine & Wellness.

Because DPC practices do not participate in any insurance plans, the physician is able to avoid the ever-increasing and costly documentation demands and administrative intrusions that come with accepting insurance. This allows Dr. Cooper to spend more time with her patients rather than doing paperwork or checking boxes on her computer.

Dr. Cooper believes that comprehensive care is built on relationships and that takes time. She believes it is these relationships that do the real healing work.

You will still use your insurance to pay for medications, lab testing, imaging and referrals.

I have Medicare. Do you accept Medicare?

No, insurance payments are not accepted at Sound Medicine & Wellness. If you have Medicare, you are welcome at Sound Medicine & Wellness. Dr. Cooper loves caring for the Medicare age population. However, she does not accept payments from Medicare and therefore, legally, you cannot ask Medicare for reimbursement for the services Dr. Cooper provides.

I have insurance. Can I use it to cover visits with Dr. Cooper?

No, you may not. The membership fee covers the entire cost of all of your visits as well as the comprehensive coordination of your care by Dr. Cooper. This model of care pairs well with a high deductible plan that often requires you to pay for most of your primary care out of pocket until you meet your deductible.

What about x-rays and labs?

Your insurance will be used for the cost of labs, x-ray and specialty care.

Contact your insurance to find out how an out of network provider's orders are covered. Words to describe the practice are: DPC, concierge or membership model.

Can I use my Health Spending Account or Flexible Spending Account dollars for Dr. Cooper's fee?

Unfortunately, federal law does not currently allow this. DPC physicians are lobbying congress to review this currently.

What if Dr. Cooper is out of town?

Dr. Cooper will inform you of planned vacations so she can address any issues ahead of time. When she will be unavailable, she will arrange for coverage with another physician for your urgent needs.

Will I still benefit from a membership even if I don't go to the doctor that often?

Absolutely. You will be able to text, e-mail, and call Dr. Cooper. Not all problems require a trip to the office. Maintaining your health is very important. The best way to stay healthy is to prevent disease in the first place. You never know when you will be in urgent need of a doctor, and it is nice to have a personal relationship with one when you do.

Testimonials About Dr. Emily Cooper

Dr. Emily Larmore Cooper has been my personal physician for the past six years. At first I felt a little uneasy having a female internist, but I can't say enough about my experience with Dr. Emily. She is fully present when I come to see her. She is thorough and listens fully to my concerns. Totally professional. She is empathetic, compassionate and completely competent. I feel that she personally cares about my well-being emotionally and physically. I would and have recommended her to others.

— Mike H.

Without hesitation I recommend Dr. Emily Cooper; you will find she is one of the most caring persons you will ever have the pleasure to meet. She has a keen intuition, warm, sincere and down to earth style which establishes the type of unique relationship we desperately need today with our health care providers.

Dr. Cooper takes the time and goes out of her way to ask you questions and understand you as a person. Her follow-up and medical advice is exceptional.

— CJ Wilson

Upon first meeting Dr. Cooper, I knew she was an outstanding doc. She spent time with me even though I knew, working at Swedish, that she saw a huge amount of patients each day. She listened to me and heard all of my concerns. I have an MS degree in a health related field and she always "meets me where I am at" and is game for trying out things that I share with her. For example, if I bring up a problem she will give me referrals and any resources she may have in the area — and if I mention a particular provider or modality, she will tell me what she knows about the provider and the topic. She has a large network in Seattle. I never feel like she overshadows my ideas or knowledge about health like I have experienced with other doctors.

The really cool thing about Dr. Cooper is that she treats my husband as well and we have developed a great doctor — patient relationship. She knows a little about me and I ask about her husband and kids as well so I don't feel like I am dealing with a stranger or a robot!

If you are hoping to find a down to earth, personable, genuine and extremely capable doctor, then I would highly recommend Dr. Emily Cooper. She is not just a 'put a bandaid on the problem' kind of doctor. She will help you figure out the cause and solution of your health issue — in a holistic way. She recommends alternative treatments like meditation and exercise — not just medicine. Thank you Doctor Cooper for your expertise and partnership.

— Pamela P.

I have no hesitation in wanting to continue this relationship in her new practice.
